The Health Protection Agency (HPA) is investigating a salmonella outbreak at a west London kebab shop. A total of 41 customers who bought food at the Shahi Nan Kabab takeaway in Shepherd’s Bush developed food poisoning – 14 have been diagnosed with salmonella. The shop has a five-star rating in one online review. Sky News reports that the shop has closed voluntarily and customers are being warned to dispose of any leftovers, rather than eat them as a snack. The owners of the shop are said to be co-operating with the HPA and Hammersmith and Fulham Council. Dr Jimmy Chow – the HPA’s expert in communicable disease control – said: As a precautionary measure, we would advise members of the public who bought food from this takeaway shop and still have it in their fridge not eat the item and throw it away. Symptoms of salmonella include stomach cramps, fever and sickness and diarrhoea. In people with impaired immune systems, more serious symptoms can develop. The HPA recommends that people affected remain at home for 48 hours after symptoms have stopped. © 5r1 Limited 2009
