Spurs goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini, who broke both wrists when he crashed his motorbike, may not receive compensation because his club says he was not insured for riding a motorcycle.
Doctors said that the player suffered potentially life changing injuries and may never be able to play football professionally again. Cudicini, 36, also fractured his pelvis in the accident when his £11,000 BMW R1200 GS collided with a Ford Fiesta in Walthamstow. He was travelling to Tottenham Hotspur’s training ground in North London at the time of the accident.
The London Evening Standard reports that the club’s manager Harry Redknapp said he did not know Cudicini had a motorbike.
‘…Clubs certainly don't encourage players to have them,’ said Mr Redknapp. ‘But now isn't the time for that. We just wish him a quick recovery. I'm just thankful he hasn't broken his back, his neck or is dead. I'm just relieved really.’
Cudicini was taken to Whipps Cross Hospital after the accident – he was transferred to a private hospital after scans supervised by Tottenham’s medical staff.
The player earns £40,000 per week – his deal at White Hart Lane expires at the end of this football season.
The driver of the car involved in the accident was 25-year-old Jennifer Bernard, who was with her child. She is reported to be ‘shocked but unhurt’.
