The Department for Transport’s (DfT) THINK! Campaign has warned drivers in Cambridge and Peterborough about the dangers of drink driving at Christmas.
The DfT campaign’s message was highlighted at road shows in Barhill and Peterborough – and on Friday (04/12/09) the Dft also launched a £1.2 million Christmas THINK! Campaign warning drivers that drinking and driving at Christmas could cost them the use of their car for a year.
The Cambridgeshire initiative will see drivers being offered free soft drinks at selected venues – and the national initiative will feature new radio and TV advertisements, as well as adverts online, in the national press and in pubs. The campaign will target young male drivers in particular, warning them that if they are caught drinking and driving during the holiday period, it could result in them losing their licence for a year.
Road Safety Officer for Cambridgeshire County Council, Phil Rennie, said: ‘We urge all drivers to consider not just their own safety this Christmas, but also the safety of other road users. Our message to all drivers this Christmas is drive safely, responsibly, and without being under the influence of alcohol; otherwise you could ruin your own life and the lives of others.’
Road Safety Minister Paul Clark said at the launch of the Cambridgeshire initiative:
‘Drink driving ruins lives. Last year, 430 people didn't make it home to their families because of drink drivers. My message to drivers in Cambridgeshire is clear – if you're drinking this Christmas then leave the car at home.
‘Anyone convicted of drink driving will lose their licence for a minimum of 12 months – they’ll also get a criminal record and a large fine. Don't ruin Christmas in a moment of selfishness.’
