Butterkist popcorn manufacturer Tangerine Confectionery has recalled packets and a batch of two products, after corn weevils were found in some packets of popcorn.
The Press Association reports that the insects were found in three packets of Butterkist Sweet Microwave multipack popcorn, as well as one batch of Butterkist Sweet Microwave single pack popcorn.
The batch numbers – which are printed on the Best Before panels on the packs – are B8386, B8497 and B8496 on the multipacks and A8394 on the batch of single packs.
A statement issued by the company said:
‘We would like to reassure customers that this does not represent any form of health risk and that the problem has been identified and is limited to only these two Butterkist products.
‘Whilst the vast majority of Tangerine Confectionery products are made in our UK factories, the Microwave Popcorn is produced on our behalf in France and was available in Asda, Sainsbury's, Morrisons and other multiple and independent retailers between January 29 and March 13, 2010.’
Rentokil said that weevils are long, dark brown insects that usually measure around 2mm or 3mm in length.
They are a common pest worldwide, and can pose problems in stored produce such as wheat and maize. Weevils usually die if exposed to extremes of temperature, either extreme heat or freezing conditions.
Tangerine Confectionery has stressed, however, that the insects found in their products do not pose a health risk.
Customers who bought the batch numbers affected will be offered a refund if they call the free helpline number 0800 0352535. © 5r1 Limited 2010 |
