Midwife cuts off baby’s finger while cutting umbilical cord

A midwife at Wolverhampton’s New Cross Hospital allegedly cut off a newborn baby’ s finger while cutting the umbilical cord – and then left the delivery room for around 30 seconds to get help.

The Daily Mail reports that new mother Jasvir Kainth was left with her baby Ishika after the incident in a room ‘with blood everywhere’.

The baby was rushed immediately to Birmingham Children’s Hospital after being born, where she had her finger stitched back on. She will spend the first few weeks of her life with a heavily bandaged hand as she recovers.

A spokesperson for New Cross Hospital has confirmed that the incident is being investigated.

'We can confirm here has been an incident. It is being fully investigated by an external investigator and the findings will be shared with both the trust board and the relevant family.’

Mrs Kainth, 28, from Wolverhampton gave birth on Friday, 14 May, after a four-hour labour. She said the midwife was working alone and was using scissors that might have been too sharp – and it was her husband, 36-year-old Parminder Kainth, who noticed that she had cut off his daughter’s finger on her left hand at the same time as cutting the umbilical cord.

'We were hysterical,’ said Mrs Kainth. ‘We weren't even sure Ishika would make it through because there was blood everywhere.

'It has caused so much stress to both of us, because when the birth is normal otherwise like ours was then you just don't expect these things to happen.’

Baby Ishika was separated from her mother immediately after birth and then had to travel 17 miles to Birmingham for surgery. Mr Kainth said:

'We were told the midwife who did it had 22 years of experience, so how it happened in the first place we'll never know. It's an issue of clinical negligence and has left us both mentally scarred – the whole thing was ludicrous and horrifying.

'We just don't know what will happen to Ishika – she might need restructuring of her finger in the future.’
