The Royal Liverpool Hospital has admitted liability and agreed to pay compensation to two brothers who were poisoned with iron after receiving blood transfusions.
The BBC reports that, over the course of 25 years, Liam McNeely, 35, and his brother Paul, 39, were given transfusions for a rare form of anaemia called pyruvate kinase deficiency. However, although their blood was iron deficient, other organs stored too much of the iron from the treatment. Consultant haematologist and divisional medical director at the hospital Patrick Chu said that the hospital had apologised both verbally and in writing. The hospital has agreed to an undisclosed settlement out-of-court that will pay for the brothers’ care for the rest of their lives, according to their mother, Linda McNeely. The brothers were diagnosed with iron overload in 2001 – as a result of this, Liam sufferers from osteoporosis and diabetes and his brother Paul requires constant care from his family and carers. To treat the poisoning and try and reduce the level of iron in their organs, the brothers had to be visited daily by district nurses. Mr Chu said: ‘Changes in national practices and guidelines in the last decade mean there are now additional safeguards in place to ensure this does not happen again.’ © 5r1 Limited Free Medical Negligence Claim AdviceIf you or a loved one has suffered from medical negligence by a doctor, then contact 5r1 Claims.
