Pharmaceutical manufacturer Procter & Gamble (P&G) is recalling thousands of Vicks nasal sprays after it was discovered that some might have been contaminated.
It is thought some products might contain the dangerous bacteria B cepacia, which can cause a serious infection in those with compromised immune systems or a lung disease such as cystic fibrosis.
ITN News reports that a total of 120,000 sprays have been recalled in the UK, Germany and US.
In Britain, the recall applies to the product Vicks Sinex Micromist Aqueous Nasal Spray Solution, 15ml. The Lot Number of supplies affected in the UK is 9224028832 and it is listed both on the bottle and the packaging, says P&G.
The company has said, however, that the bacteria has been traced to a single batch of raw material used in the sprays, which has been used in three lots of product sold in the UK, Germany and US. To date there has been no report of anyone falling ill as a result of using the nasal sprays.
The company said on its website:
‘P&G detected this problem during routine quality control at the plant and promptly took action.’
Anyone who has bought the spray and is worried can call the P&G helpline on 0800 555 515.
