A patient has died after being given the flu vaccine Pandemrix – and a further 1,329 people have reported adverse effects to the jab.
The Daily Mail reports that the patient who died had underlying health conditions which experts think are more likely to be the cause of death than the H1N1 vaccine itself.
However, an investigation has been launched into the death, after more than 1,000 people reported adverse side effects in just four weeks. Symptoms included pain and swelling at the injection site, as well as vomiting, dizziness and fever.
There have also been two cases of anaphylactic shock reported in connection with UK drug company GlaxoSmithKline's flu vaccine Pandemrix – one child experienced seizures and developed arthritis. However, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency said that no link between the symptoms and having received the vaccine had been established.
A spokesman for the Department of Health is quoted in the Daily Mail as saying: ‘There are no concerns about these reports.’
