A 14-year-old girl who died from a heart attack at a party may have been given a drug legally available on the Internet – and costing as little as £4 a gram.
The Daily Mail reports that Gabrielle Price from Worthing in Sussex was taken ill at a friend’s house at around 5.15pm on Saturday (21/11/09).
Neighbours told reporters that there were drugs available at the party – and it is thought that Gabrielle – known as ‘Gabi’ – might have taken a mixture of the anaesthetic ketamine and the plant fertiliser Mephedrone. The combination is known as ‘meow meow’. The drug is said to have effects similar to those of ecstasy and cocaine and is the latest to hit the dance scene, according to reports.
A post-mortem has failed to establish the exact cause of Gabrielle’s death and toxicology reports have been ordered.
The schoolgirl was treated at the scene for a cardiac arrest before being taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at around 10pm.
A 39-year-old woman from Brighton has been arrested on suspicion of supplying illegal drugs. She has been bailed until 14 January.
Officers also arrested and interviewed a 17-year-old boy from Hove on suspicion of providing a Class B drug. He has been bailed until 26 January. Supplying Class B drugs carries a maximum prison sentence of five years or an unlimited fine – or sometimes both. Dealing in Class B drugs carries a maximum prison sentence of 14 years.
A spokesman for Sussex Police said:
'Until we have the toxicology reports we can't say for certain what happened. There is a chance that she died of natural causes. It's very rare for a girl of her age, but it does happen.'
Detective Inspector Bill Warner added: 'We have suspicions there were two people supplying drugs but not necessarily to her.'
