A 15-year-old girl has died from a heart attack after doctors at a local hospital diagnosed her as having flu.
The Sun newspaper reports that schoolgirl Amy Carter from Stourport-on-Severn in Worcestershire fell ill on 19 December and was taken to hospital after she had been seen by her GP. Doctors at the hospital kept her in overnight and discharged her the next day, saying that she was suffering from flu.
Amy stayed in bed for the next few days but her parents, 43-year-old Richard Carter and his wife Jacqueline, 48, asked their local GP to visit her again. After a home appointment on Christmas Eve, Amy was admitted to the Worcestershire Royal Hospital and died the same day after suffering a series of heart attacks.
An inquest into Amy’s death has been opened and adjourned. The Worcestershire coroner confirmed that she had suffered from ‘a series of cardiac arrests’.
Amy’s father said that it was a comfort to know that Amy was loved by her friends – a FaceBook page dedicated to her memory has received more than 900 tributes.
A friend of the family told reporters that Amy’s death had ‘come out of the blue’.
