A Nile cruise holiday has turned to tragedy, after a British tourist was killed when a yacht he was sailing in overturned between Edfu and Aswan after heavy rains and flash floods.
Police in Egypt said that the storms have caused mudbrick houses in the area to collapse, as well as power failures in one of the main tourist resorts, Luxor. The interruptions to the electricity supply have had a knock-on effect regarding the sailing times of Nile cruises, sailboats and ferries.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has confirmed the death of Mr Day. A spokeswoman said:
'We are in contact with the family and providing them with consular assistance. We don’t have any other details at the moment.’ Hopes are also fading for a 45-year-old British diver who has been missing off Egypt’s Red Sea coast since Saturday (16/01/2010). The man was diving with 12 others at the resort of Safaga.
