A new survey by Swinton published today (29/06/09), has found that one-third of minor car accidents may be caused by arguments – also known as ‘carguments’.
Swinton questioned 2,000 customers and discovered that carguments caused 27 per cent of minor bumps and scrapes while out driving – and a further 3 per cent of more serious car accidents.
The highest number of carguments (84 per cent) occurred between married couples, with those aged 25 to 35 being the worst offenders. However, only 5 per cent of motoring couples over the age of 65 experienced carguments.
Liverpool motorists had the most carguments (14 per cent), followed by Glasgow (11 per cent), Nottingham (8 per cent), Watford (6 per cent) and Portsmouth (5 per cent).
The top five reasons for carguments were getting lost, backseat driving, music/radio station choice, relationship issues and temperature/air conditioning disagreements. Insurer Development Manager for Swinton, Steve Chelton, said:
‘Concentration is paramount while driving and what seems like a small disruption can have a big impact on a driver's attention and cause an accident… We would always advise drivers to pull over if they are being distracted and not to start driving again until safe to do so.’
Swinton is the UK’s leading high street insurance retailer, with 580 branches nationwide. It offers a range of services for the motorist, including classic car insurance and caravan and motorbike insurance.
