The government today (29/06/09) announced a major crackdown on drivers who do not wear seat belts or who use illegal number plates, with a new on-the-spot fine of £60 – an increase of £30.

The hike in the on-the-spot fine evolved from a public consultation into how to tackle motorists who refuse to wear seat belts, despite warnings that they risk serious injury to themselves or other road users.

Seat belts can reduce the risk of death by 60 per cent in a 30mph crash, but many motorists still drive without fastening their seat belt.

Motorists whose vehicle registration marks fail to conform to requirements in font, size or the colour of their number plates will also face a £60 on-the-spot fine. Using illegal number plates can hamper both criminal investigations or the detection of crime, say police.

Road Safety Minister Paul Clark said:

‘Every day someone dies because they do not think they always need to use a seat belt. This tragic waste could be avoided if everyone took the simple step of belting up every time they got in a car.’
