A British tourist on the island of Tenerife has been killed after a landslide hit the beach.
The Foreign Office confirmed that Marion O’Hara died shortly after 4pm local time at a small beach at Playa de los Gigantes.
According to a Press Association report, a, 130-ft stretch of the cliff edge overlooking the beach collapsed. A spokesman for the Spanish Interior Ministry said that one other person had died in the landslide – and another two people could be buried. The Civil Guard has said that the second victim was also female.
A worker at the local Bamboo Bar, Diane Morris, said that helicopters, fire services and ambulances attended the rescue site.
‘There has been a lot of speculation about it,’ she added. ‘Originally people said one person had died but now they are saying more. It is a little beach – more like a cove really – but it’s all taped off now.’
British holidaymaker Howard Williams told Sky News:
‘Police were aware the cliff was dangerous for days, but the only thing they put in place was a bit of builder's tape.’
Tenerife is part of the Canary Islands and is a popular destination for British tourists looking for winter sunshine.
