A person travelling in a car has been killed after it was hit by an ambulance answering a 999 call.
The accident happened at around 1pm on Sunday (01/11/09) on the Isle of Wight, according to Hampshire police.
Sky News reports that the accident happened near the island’s racecourse and another person was ‘very seriously injured’ in the incident – although those travelling in the ambulance are thought to have escaped without injury. Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service and the Air Ambulance attended the incident.
A spokeswoman for Hampshire police said:
‘Police were called after a serious crash between a car and an ambulance in East Cowes Road, near the racecourse on the Isle of Wight.
‘The ambulance was responding when the crash took place and those members of the public on board were not harmed and have been transferred to another ambulance.
‘A man who was travelling in the car has been pronounced dead at the scene, and one other person involved has very serious injuries.’
