A 46-year-old woman from Buckinghamshire has died in a ski accident in Austria, after colliding with another skier.
BBC News reports that mother-of-three Tracy Boland from Marlow collided with a 26-year-old Dutch woman in the ski resort of Kaprun.
The accident happened just after midday local time on Tuesday (16/02/10) – Mrs Boland was skiing with her husband while their children attended ski classes nearby. It is reported that Mr Boland tried to save his wife, with assistance from a doctor from Vienna who was skiing nearby.
The couple were skiing on a slope grade as a blue run, which is suitable for beginners. Neither Mrs Boland nor the unnamed Dutch woman – who was taken to hospital with serious injuries – was wearing a helmet.
A post-mortem carried out on Mrs Boland revealed that she had sustained a severed aorta in the accident.
A police spokesman said that the cause of the accident was unknown – and there were no witnesses to the incident.
‘It was a very fine day with a clear sky and there was no snowfall. There were not many people on the slopes.’
Police in Austria said that Mr Boland did not see the accident, but arrived within five minutes and tried to give first aid to his wife.
Mr Boland and his children – a daughter and two sons aged between eight and 12 years old – were due to arrive home on Thursday.
