Police have confirmed that two adults were killed when a school bus collided with two cars near Hatton County Park in Warwickshire on Tuesday (18/05/10).
The Press Association reports that the fatalities are believed to be the school bus driver and a female driver in one of the cars. Police said that two others were seriously injured in the crash, which took place at 4pm on the A4177.
The single decker school bus was carrying 16 children – a 16-year-old boy who was unconscious had to be cut from the wreckage by firemen. He was airlifted to hospital in Warwickshire. The West Midlands Ambulance Service said that a woman was also seriously injured and other school pupils were treated at the scene for minor injuries by paramedics, before being allowed home. The pupils came from Aylesford and Myton schools.
Chief Inspector Lucy Sewell said: ‘This is a serious collision in which two people have sadly lost their lives and a number of young people have been injured. ‘We are committed to protecting people on the roads in Warwickshire and we will be thoroughly investigating the scene of this collision to try to find out the circumstances surrounding how it occurred. ‘At this time our thoughts are with the families of those who have lost their lives and we will be ensuring they receive the full support of our family liaison officers.’ It is thought that the bus crashed into one of the cars head on, before hitting a tree. An ambulance service spokeswoman said: ‘Crews arrived at the scene to find a school bus and a car which had been involved in a collision. The bus also collided with a tree. ‘Both vehicles sustained very significant damage in the crash. Two adults suffered significant multiple injuries in the crash and were both confirmed dead at the scene. A woman from the car sustained chest and abdominal injuries and was transferred by land ambulance to University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire.’ © 5r1 Limited 2010
