British hikers have been killed in an accident in the Spanish Pyrenees, according to a report in the London Evening Standard newspaper.
The Foreign Office has confirmed that the accident occurred on Tuesday (18/05/10), when John Peter Field, 57, and Richard Christopher Greenwood, 56, slipped into an ice field close to the 9,000ft Pico de Frondiellas in Sallent de Gallego, northeast Spain.
Spanish media reports that the men were among a party of three and were hiking along a route that was covered with ice and snow. The route in the province of Huesca is popular with climbers and hikers in the summer, but is know to be precarious when covered with snow and ice, with the added risk of avalanches.
Mountain rescue teams recovered the bodies of the two men – the third man in the group is believed to have survived, but there is no further news of his condition. The men are reported to have been well equipped for the trip.
Mr Field is reported as being from Meriden in Warwickshire and Mr Greenwood is thought to come from Dewsbury in West Yorkshire. Police from the West Midlands Police Force and West Yorkshire Police said they had no information about the men’s deaths.
A Foreign Office spokesman said:
‘We are providing consular assistance and we are in the process of informing next of kin.’
