A chemical fire in Huddersfield was brought under control by 120 firefighters on Monday (24/05/10), after local people were warned to stay indoors and report any symptoms to doctors if they felt unwell.
Sky News reports that the chemical fire broke out at Grosvenor Chemicals in the Linthwaite area of Huddersfield in West Yorkshire at around 1am on Monday morning and fire crews fought through the night to control it. West Yorkshire Fire Service said that more than 30 vehicles were called to the scene to bring the blaze under control.
Kirklees Council closed some schools, while others opened at 11am on Monday morning.
A spokeswoman for the West Yorkshire Fire Service said that the factory has a storage section used for pesticides and glue-based products, although the cause of the blaze has not been established.
‘Foam has been used to prevent the spread of fire and the fire is now under control due to the hard work of firefighters and an effective multi-agency response,’ she said.
‘As a precaution, members of the public in the south Huddersfield area are advised to stay indoors. Anyone with concerns should contact their GP or NHS Direct – or, if you develop respiratory problems, please call an ambulance.’
